The magic of Virginia Beach is that it’s fun for everyone—children, teenagers, and adults alike. From searching for seashells to taking selfies with Hugh Mongous, our section of the East Coast is a true crowd-pleaser. One of our favorite all-ages activities is hiking near Virginia Beach to see the wildlife rehabilitation Virginia does. Coastal Accommodations is near more than one wildlife refuge, Virginia state park, and hiking area, so it can be hard to choose which to see during your visit. Here are our top picks.
Wildlife Refuge Virginia Beach
Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1938, is a haven for migratory birds. It provides a safe place for feeding and resting at a critical point of the Atlantic Flyway. So it’s fitting that Back Bay houses thousands of birds. However, birds aren’t the only thing you’ll see while visiting this wildlife refuge in Virginia. Keep a sharp eye out for more rare Virginia wildlife like the loggerhead sea turtle and, if you’re lucky, wild horses. In addition to the opportunity to view wildlife while hiking in Virginia Beach, the refuge offers several other activities. It’s the perfect way to go hiking near Virginia Beach and see animals in their natural habitat.
False Cape State Park Hiking Near Virginia Beach
Just past Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, Virginia state park False Cape rests along the Atlantic coast. False Cape State Park is not accessible by car, but visitors are welcome to walk, run, or bike the rest of the way after parking at Back Bay. The park also operates the Blue Goose Tram and the Terra Gator during peak season. Thanks to the limited automobile traffic, this is an especially secluded spot along the Atlantic Flyway, so you’re sure to see more of our beloved Virginia wildlife as you pass through the trail system. False Cape is a more challenging section of hiking near Virginia Beach. As a result, it’s the place to go for a scenic workout, but it might not be as suitable for small children as Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge of Virginia.
