1 | Wake Up with a Walk on the Beach

Virginia touts thousands of miles of shoreline that set the scene for a great stroll with Mom! Or maybe the mother in your life needs some alone time? Plan to take over the kids and let her wander with the sand between her toes and saltwater scents. With well over 25 beaches to choose from here are some of the things you need to know when sending her out to experience a gift that is truly good for the soul.

The Oceanfront of Virginia Beach

The Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay meet to create one of the most gorgeous places to catch the stunning sunrise over the ocean that is often accompanied by dolphins frolicking in the waves. Sunbathing on the wide picturesque beaches post-walk is a favorite. But, if you prefer something less sedentary, the Oceanfront is famous for its three-mile boardwalk where you can bike, run, rollerblade, or combine the sand and the action and rent a fat tire bike and cruise the sand!

Chic’s Beach

The Chesapeake Bay is known for its local laid-back vibe: with gentler waves, shallower waters, and sea glass for days! If you missed the window to see the sunrise at the Oceanfront, the Bay has you covered with stunning views of the sunset over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. This beach is not just for laying out either. It features beach Volleyball nets and friendly competitions which creates a truly local atmosphere.

2 | Breakfast with Bay Local

Bay Local

Mother’s Day is known as a day for brunch. And though Bay Local is a spot we love for brunch, your wait can be shortened by beating the crowd and arriving closer to their 7 am open than to a more traditional brunch time. It doesn’t get more Virginia Beach than Bay Local, which sources all of their own produce, meats, and seafood. We highly recommend the soft shell crab Bloody Mary that will be in prime season for the holiday and the “Ta-chos” (think nachos, but with a tater-tot base!).  The portions are generous with a very southern/coastal vibe that will leave the mom in your life ready to relax the day away!

3 | Fun with the Kids at Grommet Island Park on the Beach

Grom Park

After all the espresso and sugar, it’ll be time for the little dudes and dudettes to run off all the energy – on the beach! Head down to 1st Street to Grommet Island Park (or Grom Park as the locals call it). This 15,000 beach park nestled at the end of the Oceanfront boardwalk next to where Rudee Inlet meets the Atlantic Ocean is a kid’s dream. While the kids play, you can watch the surfers at the 1st Street Jetty or the fishing and commercial boats head out to sea. Bring quarters for metered parking or really wear them out by biking down the boardwalk. Too tuckered out to ride back? Catch the iconic Virginia Beach Trolley and stow your bikes on the front!

4 | Treat Mom to a Shopping Trip

The Beach Nut

You don’t have to venture far from the shoreline to take the lady in your life to some great shopping spots. When it comes to beach-town shopping, one of our favorite spots is The Beach Nut. The store is lined with items and jewelry that create that overall Virginia Beach laid-back, chic style that will suit any mama. They boast of being “a treasure trove for the fashion and decor savvy treasure hunter.” Whether you are adorning her home or her arm, you’ll find some of the best gifts here! The Gurgle Pot, for example, is a great seaside gift for those moms who like to entertain.

The Shops at Hilltop

Want more variety? Head west to The Shops at Hilltop. “Hilltop” as the locals call it is located just 5 minutes from the oceanfront and boasts all the shops you need to allow your mom to find something special. From the Saltwater Taffy at Forbes Candy to exquisitely curated fashions of The Bahama Shop to the quintessential bold beach prints of Lilly Pulitzer at Ocean Palm, you will have a full day of pursuing here!

5 | Lunch at the Oceanfront

While you are shopping at the Beach Nut, you will already be at one of the best restaurants at the oceanfront – Watermans! Lunch is a great time to sit outside on the patio and take in the salt air as well as watch the hustle and bustle of the boardwalk.

Orange Crush

We will say, from experience, that the only way to truly have lunch by the water is with an Orange Crush from Waterman’s (our favorite cocktail in town) in hand. Think squeezed in front of your orange juice, crushed soft ice, with or without a little shot of orange vodka.

6 | A Spa Afternoon

If there is one thing that is at the top of every Mom’s list is a little “me time.” Virginia Beach has a wide variety of spas to choose from but there are two options that really stand out and are unique to the area.

The A.R.E. Health Center and Spa

On the North End of Virginia Beach is The A.R.E Health Center and Spa. Boasting a Holistic approach focusing on the mind, body, spirit connection, and care, the A.R.E. attracts visitors internationally who are looking to study Edgar Cayce’s readings – which support your body’s innate healing abilities. Their spa is a truly comprehensive experience that will get your mom in touch with her inner peace!

SeaHill Spa

Though a spa day is always a “Yes, Please” occasion for your mom if you really want to knock her socks off this year you can treat her to a few treatments at the historical Cavalier Hotel’s SeaHill Spa. Named Coastal Virginia’s most luxurious destination spa resort, all of its services are marine-inspired and use the most natural luxury products. Though their saunas and steam rooms are a step above, the mom in your life will be blown away with the Himalayan Salt Cove with dry salt air that has negatively charged ions in salt improving health and mood, plus so much more.

7 | Flowers for the Marvelous Mother

Traditional Flower

Ok, so nothing says old school Mother’s Day like a beautiful bouquet of flowers. And if fresh cut flowers will make your Mom’s heart swoon, then look no further than Palette of Petals designs. They have some of the most creative designs and something for every occasion, especially Mother’s Day!

A Modern Floral Experience

But if you would like something that is going to last a little longer and/or would like to incorporate some time spent together with your mom, we cannot say enough good things about PlantBar of Virginia Beach. They have a unique boutique plant shop at the oceanfront where you can build a love for plants by using their cute containers as the base of your creation! Plus, what mom is going to say no to some quality time with her kids or a gift made by them?

8 | Dinner at Eurasia Cafe

Eurasia Cafe is so much more than a cafe as the name eludes. Their regional American cuisine paired with their extensive wine menu will be music to your mom’s ears and her taste buds all the same. Though their menu is seasonal, there are some staples that we could not recommend more! Stick with the hot & sour soup and truffle fries as well as starting with some locally harvested oysters and you cannot lose!

9 | Finish First with a Kentucky Derby Party

Cavalier Hotel Derby Day Soiree

Though the date of Mother’s Day is prescribed to us every year, why not mix it up and beat the crowds by putting a twist on Mother’s Day this year? Celebrate on a day other than the Sunday that the calendar says we must. We love the idea of celebrating in a more lively fashion. Becca Garden at the Cavalier Hotel will be the perfect spot to celebrate with Mom! Have fun getting decked out in your derby gear together, sip mint juleps, and root for your favorite horse (whether it be based on merit on the name alone). The garden will be in full-swing Spring blossom, setting the perfect backdrop for great that family photo opt!

10 | Take in a Sunset

We love that in Virginia Beach you can be in gorgeous settings and capture both the sunrise and the sunset. Let’s face it, moms are often forced into early rising by default, so why not let Mom sleep in on Mother’s Day and enjoy the beauty of the sunset. As we mentioned, the Chesapeake Bay is an amazing spot to see the sunset, but we have a few other hidden gems for you to explore as well!

Rudee Inlet

Though many know Rudee Inlet for the sunrise, many don’t know that if you start at sunrise and then stay all day you can then turn around and experience a magical sunset. This is one of the most picturesque spots to see a sunset because you have the Rudee Inlet Bridge in the foreground with a background adorned with fishing boats and a marina. The color of the painted sky then magically pulls it all together.

The Narrows

Another great spot to consider taking Mom is the Narrows, which is the waters that run along the beaches of the First Landing State Park. It’s a spot that’s remote and not well known by the masses, making it the perfect spot to relax with your mama. With sunsets over the water and its overall photogenic characteristics, you can often find professional photographers working in this area. Whether they’re taking photos of the sunset or an engagement shoot, photographers flock to this spot for photos. Consider scheduling a photographer to take a family photo as a gift to pair with the sunset for your Mom!
